Dr. Maino receives AM Skeffington Award

The College of Optometrists in Vision Development have awarded Dominick M. Maino, OD, MEd. FAAO, FCOVD-A the 2009 A.M. Skeffington Award during their annual meeting in Denver, Co. this past October.

Dr. Dominick Maino is a Professor in the Pediatrics and Binocular Vision Service of the Illinois Eye Institute and the Illinois College of Optometry (ICO) and is in private practice in Harwood Heights, Illinois, USA. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics and Binocular Vision at the Centro Boston de Optometria in Madrid Spain, and the Director of the Developmental Disabilities Service at the Victor C. Neumann Association facility on Chicago's north side. Dr. Maino is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and the College of Optometrists in Vision Development.

He is the editor of Optometry & Vision Development and has authored more than 200 books, book chapters, monographs, websites and articles covering a wide range of topics from computers to Fragile X Syndrome and has given more than 100 international presentations to optometrists and other health care professionals world-wide. He is a co-author of the ASCOTech column for Optometric Education and is currently the associate, consulting, and/or contributing editor and manuscript reviewer for more than 13 publications and writes frequently for various journals.

Dr. Maino has received recognition for his work from the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association, College of Optometrists in Vision Development, Optometric Editors Association, and the Easter Seal Society of Metropolitan Chicago. He is an internationally recognized expert on oculo-visual problems of children and adults with disabilities. His research and clinical interests include special populations (mental, physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities, traumatic/acquired brain injury), pediatrics, computer applications in optometry and individuals with binocular vision dysfunction. Dr. Maino's avocations include website design, music and photography.

This award is presented to the COVD Fellow who has made outstanding contributions to the optometric literature in the areas of vision therapy and vision development. Nominations for this award are made by members of the College.

......“When necessary, children at any age can wear contact lenses,” says Dr. Dominick Maino, a professor of pediatric optometry at the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. Contact lenses require some work on the part of the patient—keeping them clean, storing them correctly, inserting them gently. So chronological age is less important in making this decision than motivation and maturity.

Girls may be ready at a younger age than boys. Says Dr. Maino: “I usually tell parents that when boys start to notice girls, and when girls can keep their rooms clean, they may be ready for contact lenses.” Some kids are able to use them properly with parental supervision and help.

But Dr. Maino also cautions, “Parents should not push their child to wear contact lenses. It must be the child’s idea. They must be motivated to wear them.”

Contact lenses are not without risks, of course. Kids should not wear them while swimming or in dusty, dirty environments. They should not share them with their friends. For sports and similar activities, they may need to wear protective goggles over their contacts......

Al Primo Canto: Awesome Wine Tasing and Gourmet Experience

This was an awesome evening! The white wines were bright and crisp! The red Zarzuella was perfect with the shrimp ravioli! The other reds complimented the rest of the gourmet meal perfectly (the pork loin and lamb chops). I usually do not like port...but the Well Port...was a perfect choice for the deeply rich chocolate cake and berries served for desert. This was the 1st time Al Primo Canto did this....I will be there again when they do this again. Click on the title for more info about this fabulous restaurant! DM

Well, not quite. I sang with the Resurrection Choir that lent support to artists who have sung at the Chicago Lyric Opera, San Fransisco Opera House and other major opera venues around the world. If you look closely, I am the 4th tenor in from the right. If you listen closely....you just may hear me on the rousing chorus of Toreador!

Calling all in the Chicago-land area:

The St. Benedict's Benefit Concert on Friday, Sept. 25th (8:00pm at ST. BENEDICT CHURCH 215 W. Irving Park Rd., Chicago, IL 60618). Features all those opera songs you love from the movies, television, and TV commercials (think DeBeer Diamonds TV commercials) Solists from the Lyric opera, San Francisco opera, Santa Fe opera, The Julliard School of Music, Curtis Institute, and other renowned institutions , as well as a choir composed to folks from the Apollo Choir , Romanian Madrigal Consort, St. Benedict and St. Bartholomew Churches will be singing opera arias, duets and rousing choruses for all to enjoy. (Think of the Torredore song from Bizit's Carmen). Think famous Italian Operas....yeah, and a few German and French ones too!

I will be in the middle of all the tenors in the choir....I wisely chose NOT to be a solist.)

Dominick M. Maino was awarded two Honorable Mentions for photographs he placed into competition during the Wright Camera Club's fall meeting at the St. Bartholomew Parish Center in Chicago this past Monday. Independent judges evaluated all photographs. The top photo is of a Church built in Norway in the Middle Ages. The bottom one is a Celtic Tower and Grave Yard in Ireland.

Anytime I am fortunate enough to be recognized as an accomplished photographer by my peers I am humbled....individuals in the Wright Camera Club are phenominal artists....and I learn from them everytime we meet...and every time I (actually) follow their advice.

Celebrating 20 years of programming in Chicago, Around the Coyote announces a Spring Arts Festival highlighting the best of Chicago's emerging visual and performing arts. Painters, sculptors, photographers, installation artists, printmakers, filmmakers, actors, performance artists, musicians and poets will exhibit, sell and perform their work in a variety of large and small venues throughout West Town.

This festival will be curated by Anne Mills and a special guest curator (visual art), Catherine Forster (media arts), Homeroom (music), Megan Shuchman and Amanda Dunne (theatre).

This year's festival will take place concurrently with the Do Division Street Festival with outdoor music stages curated by Empty Bottle and food vendors from some of West Town's best restaurants. Boutiques along Division Street will also be offering special sales throughout the weekend.

Saturday, June 6, 2009 immediately following the 5PM Mass. Come and hear great music performed by a virtuoso on St. Bartholomew's 1928 Kilgen Organ. Dr. Peterson has performed all over the United States and abroad to critical acclaim.

The St. Bartholomew Adult and Children Choirs will perform at the 5:00 P.M. Mass, and the Concert will begin with the recessional at the conclusion of the Mass. The Choir will join Dr. Peterson during the concert on several selections.
